A tool for decision making: Gains V's Costs

4 questions to help with making decsions

Ever had one of those really hard decisions to make – Do you do The Thing or do you not do the Thing? Do you take the money or do you open the box?

Decisions can be tough so here are four simple but powerful questions to help you work things through:

  • What are the gains of doing The Thing?

  • What are the costs of doing The Thing?

  • What are the gains of NOT doing The Thing?

  • What are the costs of NOT doing The Thing?

If there are 2 or more things that you are deciding between as these questions for EACH option and then also ask:

  • What are the gains of doing neither option?
  • What are the costs of doing neither option?

There is usually more than one gain and more than one cost so spend some time with these questions – get out a pen and paper if that helps!

Simple questions are often the best and they help you cut to the chase, to get right to the core of things. Questions that ask you to consider things from multiple perspectives, can help you see things in a new or different way.

So, there you have it, 4 short but powerful questions to help as you tackle big decisions (and the smaller ones too!)
