Three ways to get clearer about what you want from life

1) Stop doing the things you feel “meh” about

I’m not talking about things like paying your bills, or doing your taxes etc, I’m talking about the smaller things: the invite to Friday drinks that you really don’t enjoy, going to an art exhibit because you think you “should”, watching that TV show that you really couldn’t care less about but all of your friends watch. Stop doing it. By saying No to these things you’ll make space for the things that you 100% definitely absolutely want to do.

2) Turn down the noise

Unsubscribe from & unfollow anything that leaves you feeling that you aren’t good enough. Turn down the volume on ads on TV / streaming services (you’ll be amazed how much difference this makes). Stop filling every spare second with podcasts. Give your brain space to breathe, give your thoughts & your daydreams some space to come out and play. Stem the flow of people telling you what you should want out of life – it’s your life, not theirs.

3) Write a list
(actually, write two lists)

Write a list of your proudest moments over the last 10 years. Then, write a list of all the things you want to be proud of in the next 10 years.

Take your time with the list writing, ponder it, reflect on it. Leave it for a day or two and then come back to it. Don’t be afraid to cross things out on your future list – often, after some deep reflection, the things on that second list might not feel right any more.

You don’t have to have a crystal clear, 12 step plan, about what you want your life to be like, about what you actually want out of your life. Sometimes it’s more of a vague direction that you walk in and things get clearer along the way.

What you want out of your life will probably change as you live it and that’s ok… provided you change what you’re doing too. It’s like driving, if you decide you no longer want to go to the beach that’s ok, but if you don’t get off the motorway you’ll end up at the beach anyway when you really want to be somewhere else.
